How Standard booking works

Standard is the budget way to get a road test date. Name the site you'd like, we book a standard opening there, and the details come to you by text or email. It's $25 per booking, and the usual wait runs roughly 5-9 weeks, depending on the site.

If you're still building confidence behind the wheel, that wait works in your favor. Five to nine weeks is real practice time: parallel parking between parked cars, turns at busy corners, a few drives after dark. Plan your practice hours around the date as soon as you get it.

Choose your site with test day in mind, not just the map. Think about how you'll get there on a weekday, who's coming with you, and whether you want our car to meet you there. Our list covers 27 NYC sites: 6 in Brooklyn, 12 in Queens, 3 in the Bronx and 6 on Staten Island.

To book any road test, the DMV system asks for your 9-digit permit ID, your MV-278 or MV-285 number, a ZIP code for where you want to test, a mobile number and a representative vehicle. It helps to have them ready. Our $25 covers the booking service only; DMV fees are separate and go to the state.

Test day, step by step

Here's how a typical NYC road test day flows, from leaving home to seeing your result. Knowing the order ahead of time takes a lot of the guesswork, and some of the nerves, out of it.

  1. 1

    Check before you leave

Bad weather or road work can cancel or move a road test. Look up your appointment in the DMV scheduling system that morning, before you head out. It takes a minute and can save you a wasted trip.

  2. 2

Get there with time to spare

We suggest being in the area 30 minutes early, or 60 if you're using our car, so the warm-up drive isn't rushed. DMV's own page talks about arriving up to 15 minutes before your slot, so the extra cushion is for traffic and parking. Being late is the real danger: the examiner may not be able to test you, and you'd need a new date.

  3. 3

    Dress for the outdoors

Not every test site has a shelter, so check the forecast and dress for it. Wear comfortable shoes that let you feel the pedals. Leave anything you don't need at home.

  4. 4

    Line up with papers ready

DMV's guidance for driving schools describes the car pulling up to the end of the test line with the paperwork ready for the examiner. Have your photo permit, your original MV-278 (or MV-285), your MV-262 if you're under 18, and your companion's physical license in hand, not buried in a bag.

  5. 5

Photos and a look at the car

Before you drive, the examiner photographs you, your documents, your permit and the car. Lapsed paperwork or in-transit plates are not something you want to discover in the test line, so sort them out days ahead.

  6. 6

    The drive

You drive on ordinary city streets and follow the examiner's directions. Parallel parking is part of every road test, and a three-point turn may come up. DMV's guidance for driving schools says the examiner isn't trying to trick you, so focus on driving safely and listening closely.

  7. 7

    Get your results card

When the drive is over, you get a card that explains how to look up your result online. Keep it somewhere safe. Then head home and try to relax.

  8. 8

Check your result after 6 p.m.

Results go online after 6 p.m. on test day. Passed? You get an interim license online; carry it with your photo permit until the photo license shows up by mail in about 2 weeks. Didn't pass? Your permit is still good, and you can book again after at least 14 days.

Questions about the road test

Which sites can I choose?

Any of the 27 NYC road test sites on our list, spread over Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island and the Bronx. Manhattan has no sites of its own.

Why does the wait depend on the site?

Openings vary from site to site. That's why we give a range of about 5-9 weeks instead of one fixed number.

Does $25 include the DMV road test fee?

No. The $25 pays for our booking service. Your learner permit fee already covers two road tests, and that money goes to the state.

Can I add your car later?

Yes. Book the date now and add the $115 car whenever you're ready.

What if my plans change?

Let us know 48 hours or more before your test, and we'll help you pick a new date. Rescheduling may come with a fee.

Is the 5-hour course required before booking?

Yes, unless you completed a high school or college driver ed program (MV-285). Without a finished pre-licensing course on your record, the DMV system won't let anyone book your test, us included. Our live online class costs $40 with the MV-278 certificate included, and runs in English and Spanish groups.

What is the 5-hour course, and who has to take it?

It's New York's pre-licensing class: about 5 hours on traffic rules, defensive driving, risky behavior, and alcohol and drugs, with no time behind the wheel. Most people getting a first New York license need it (driver ed graduates with an MV-285 are the exception), including new residents with a license from another country and drivers whose NY license expired 2 or more years ago. Licenses from another U.S. state or Canada can often be exchanged instead.

Will the 5-hour class prepare me for the road test?

No, and the DMV says so itself. The class covers the knowledge side of driving. The skills the examiner scores, like parallel parking, turns and observation, come from practice hours with a licensed driver or from driving lessons.

How long is my MV-278 good for?

One year from the date it's issued. It can't be renewed, so if it runs out, you take the course again. Bring the original to your road test; copies aren't accepted.

How far out will my test date be?

With our Standard booking, most people get a date roughly 5-9 weeks away, depending on the site. Rush sends us looking for the soonest openings, often at several nearby sites, and the typical result is a test roughly 1-3 weeks away. Being flexible about the site usually gets you an earlier date. Tests are almost always on weekdays.

What do I bring on test day?

Your physical photo learner permit, your original MV-278 (or MV-285), a completed MV-262 if you're under 18, and glasses or contacts if your permit requires them. Add a licensed companion with a physical license and a test-ready car, or use ours.

Who can come with me to the test site?

Only your accompanying licensed driver. They must be over 18 if they drive you there, or at least 21 if you drive there on your permit, and they need a physical license that's valid for the car. No other passengers are allowed at the site.

No car of my own. Is that a problem?

Not if you book ours. The DMV doesn't supply cars, but ours costs $115 per test day. It carries full insurance, it's prepared for the DMV test, it shows up at your site, and a brief warm-up drive comes first. It's built for people with no car and nobody licensed to bring them.

Can I use a rental or a friend's car?

Yes, as long as it meets the rules: valid registration, insurance and inspection, permanent plates, everything working, and a clean interior. For a rental, bring the rental agreement plus written permission to use the car for a road test.

I have a license from another country. What changes?

You still take the written test, the 5-hour course and the road test. If your license isn't in English, bring an International Driving Permit or a certified translation to the road test. Once you pass, you hand your foreign license to the examiner.

What happens if I don't pass?

Your permit stays valid until its expiration date. Wait at least 14 days, then book again. The fee you paid for your permit covers two road tests; after two fails, you pay $10 for two more through the DMV's online services before you can book.

When and how do I get my result?

After the drive, you get a card explaining how to check your result online. Results post after 6 p.m. on test day. If you passed, you get an interim license online, and the photo license arrives by mail in about 2 weeks.

Can I move my test date?

Yes. Give us 48 hours' notice or more, and we'll help you pick a new date. Rescheduling may come with a fee.

Are you the DMV?

No. We're an independent private service. The DMV runs every road test at its own sites, and whatever the DMV charges goes to the state, separate from our prices.
